We began by working alongside founders to see where we could help.
What we saw
What we found was more serious than we expected. Business after business was carrying employment and operational risk that nobody inside it had recognised.
That is how this kind of risk behaves. It compounds quietly as a team grows, it is rarely visible from the outside, and by the time it surfaces it is usually expensive to put right.
Why it reaches you
Risk of this kind seldom stays with the founder. It reaches the grant body that funded the business, the bank that lent to it, the accelerator that selected it, the university that spun it out, and the partner who put their name beside it.
These are the places where reputation is held, which makes them the best place to catch the problem early. With the Fair Work Agency now enforcing proactively and new employment rights legislation raising the stakes, it is becoming difficult to justify leaving it unexamined. Unexamined risk also slows growth.
We found the risk first, then built a way to measure it.
The idea of auditing and measuring this risk came out of working alongside founders and small businesses. We developed two reviews, and both are already being used with them in practice.
THE CHECK, for businesses of about 3 to 20 employees, shows what is in place, what is missing and what to do about it.
The HIRE 3D™ Audit, for businesses of about 15 to 150 employees, tests a full set of controls: specific things that should be in place.
For the first time, a backer can see the same picture inside every business they support, along with what each founder needs to do about it.
Where this is going?
Our aim is for this to become the standard across the sector, so that a founder, a funder and a lender can all work from the same evidence. When risk is measured consistently, backers can see it early, founders can put it right, and more businesses succeed.

Pete Thompson, our Director of Compliance, is a senior HR leader who specialises in people risk, governance and organisational assurance, with expertise in psychometrics, management capability and decision risk.
Darren Jennings, our Commercial Director, has more than 25 years of experience building teams in commercial settings, with many years in senior management.
